Beneath Your Hat

I love hats! Floppy hats, straw hats, baseball caps, toboggans (that’s what we call it in the South), fedoras, and especially this boater hat. While each hat looks different, they all serve the same purpose. The purpose is to cover our head and shade our face.

For us women, we have an unsaid commitment with hats that stands for better or worse. For better…those days that I intentionally fix my hair to wear a specific hat with a specific style. For worse…those days that I have dirty hair and need to cover it up. Either way, our hat remains true.

All materialism and vanity aside…

…it’s whats beneath a hat that matters most. I read a quote once that said:

“And all your future lies beneath your hat.” (John Oldham)

This could be interpreted in many ways, but my interpretation leads me to understand that I have the mind, the intelligence, and the dream all encompassed “beneath my hat.”

The interesting connection between the author John Oldham and this statement, was that he lived out his future in a big way. Oldham was a colonist that settled Massachusetts. A pilgrim that had the mind, the intelligence, and the dream to find a New World.

What’s beneath our hat?…

Although my “World” is quite different from his “World,” his world did pave the way for mine. Since his time there have been many people that have come and gone with their “hats” on. What they did beneath their hat caused grief for some while there were those that brought joy for others.

Now I’m left to use what’s beneath my hat to pave the way for someone else. What I have found beneath my hat is a purpose that looks for those places to give encouragement and service to others.

So what’s beneath your hat? Well…it’s you. It can never be underestimated that what is beneath your hat matters the most. Your mind, your intelligence, and your dreams are the bond that drives your heart to run after who you were meant to be. Although we have common characteristics, what you were meant to be is unique to you. Together we are intelligent, confident, and driven. What is beneath our hat?…the woman in The Red Dress.
